Crossing the Sea with Fortuna

Saxony and Denmark – Marriages and
Alliances Mirrored in Art (1548-1709)

exhibition of the  Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Royal Danish Collection, Rosenborg Castle

Residenzschloss Dresden

August 23, 2009 to January 4, 2010

Three hundred years after the magnificent celebrations to mark King Frederick IV’s visit to August the Strong’s court, the Grünes Gewölbe of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden and the Royal Danish Collections at Rosenborg Castle will stage a large-scale joint exhibition illustrating the close dynastic ties between Electoral Saxony and the Kingdom of Denmark ( ).

The exhibition will focus on the women of the two courts in chronological order, examining the cultural and artistic transfers that took place between the two countries.
Located in what was then referred to as central Germany, the Electorate of Saxony cultivated close ties with Denmark, then the most powerful kingdom in northern Europe, for over two centuries.  The two powers forged a significant alliance in the mid 16th century, when Duke Augustus married Princess Anna of Denmark in 1548. The union was to be the foundation of a special relationship between Saxony and Denmark; three more marriages followed in the 17th century, strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Fine art works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods bear witness to the calibre of the art collections held by these Saxon and Danish couples. The exhibition documents the discerning eye with which the royals pursued their passion for collecting art, representing their court and penchant for exquisite gifts.
